When we think about winter, we think about staying warm by a fire place or a heater or jumping into a cosy bed warmed by an electric blanket. But each of these items also come with risks and can pose a fire hazard. That is why it's important to make sure your smoke alarms are in working order!!
Some important points to remember:
Landlords are responsible for the installation of smoke alarms in a rental property
Once tenancy begins it is up to the tenant to replace the batteries in battery operated smoke alarms (landlords replace batteries in hard wired smoke alarms)
Tenants should remember to test their smoke alarms regularly and make sure they are in working order
Landlords have an obligation to annually check smoke alarms
If there is no smoke alarm, or if it is faulty, tenants need to contact their landlord straight away.
